A small bathroom can be a real pain…sometimes literally if you’re constantly bumping into things because there’s no storage space. Here are some creative ways to maximize the space you do have in your small bathroom.

Hang shelves. You have more wall space than you think in your bathroom. Consider installing a picture ledge between the sink and mirror. Or if you need bigger storage, hang larger shelving for towels and washcloths in the space between the shower and ceiling. The area between the ceiling and top of the door is also wasted space that could serve as storage for infrequently used items like beach towels.

Add under-sink storage. Pedestal sinks can be pretty, but they come with absolutely zero storage. You can buy cabinets that are designed to wrap around the base of a pedestal sink, or make them yourself. If you’re on a tight budget, simply hang some pretty fabric around the sink with Velcro or Command Hooks to create hidden storage.

Purchase a wall-mounted toilet. Toilets and their bulky bases can take up a lot of space in a bathroom. With a wall-mounted toilet, the tank and plumbing are hidden inside the wall and accessible through a panel, which also makes them more appealing to the eye.

Try towel bars. Hang baskets by mounting a towel bar on the wall and hanging storage baskets with an S-hook.

Let some light in. If you have an outside wall in your bathroom and no window, think about installing one. Natural light always helps brighten up a room and makes it feel larger. The fresh air will also help stave off mold and mildew.

Hang a second shower curtain rod inside the shower. Store items inside the shower using a second curtain rod. Hang items with hooks and baskets; use it to prop shampoo and soap bottles on; and drape your washcloth over it.

Utilize back-of-door storage. This is prime real estate for storage. Hang hooks for towels and bathrobes on the entry door. Mount baskets or magnetic strips on the backs of cabinet doors to hold small items.

Create hidden storage. A full-length mirror can hide a plethora of bath items. Think medicine cabinet storage on a bigger scale. We particularly like this DIY version, or if you’re not the handy type, you can purchase one like this one from Amazon.

Carve out a niche. If you have the wall space, you can cut into the sheetrock and build recessed shelving between wall studs. You can find a good tutorial for creating recessed shelves here. Or search Pinterest for some other great ideas and tutorials. 

Install sliding shelves in cabinets. Take your cabinet storage vertical by installing shelves that slide out for convenience. This is a pretty simple job that creates a lot more storage and helps you keep those pesky cabinets organized.
